This is a delightfully short aliyah - not because it's short (more Torah, please!) but because it's still jammed with utter delights. (New project: Read one single verse of Torah a day and meditate on it: that's still 16 years of Torah.)
It made me think of the concept of what it means to be chosen, as there are two verses about this being a chosen relationship. We choose G-d and "walk in G-d's ways" - G-d chooses us and elevates us above all others, and treasures us as a people.
It's a partnership but it's a chosen partnership. And furthermore, in the unity of all time, this is a deal that could've only been made simultaneously - we both had to choose at the exact same time. And luckily we both chose correctly.
The higher G-d lifts us, the more we listen, and on and on and on again. It should be an endless beautiful cycle. But if you think about it, the higher we go, the more we have to fall. Perhaps this is why the catastrophes that have struck the Jewish people have been so incredibly devastating. The higher you go, the harder they fall.
And that's why the obligations must be taken so seriously. At least in this transaction, we always know that one side will hold up its end of the bargain. So, really, the work all comes down to us.
The treasure -- literally -- is there for the taking. All it takes is a good, solid walk in G-d's Ways.
