What is the ark?
The ark is perhaps the only place on earth where G-d's Essence lives.
Why only in the ark?
When G-d created the world, he did so by speaking. His Words are not his Essence; they are an emanation which, although still G-d, are merely an emanation.
Until the time of the building of the aron and the ohel and the mishkan and, later, the Beit HaMikdash, the world was full of G-d but only His Emanation.
When all of these were built, we -- we ourselves! -- built a dwelling place not only for G-d but also His Essence.
It was from just above this Essence that G-d spoke to Moshe throughout our time in the desert.
Where is G-d's Essence? Has it escaped from the ark? Is it still held within there? Is it nowhere to be found? Or is it now everywhere?
(I vote everywhere. Now that we've created the ark for H', His Essence has been able to permeate all material things. And his Essence always could be found, in some respects, in our soul. Therefore, the entire world and universe is G-d and His Essence reaches both the material and the spiritual. We just have to look hard enough.)
